On Jan. 24, 2019, accompanied by Prof. WANG Jian Jun, head of Fudan-Wayne united stem cells transformation laboratory, Prof. Steven N. Kalkanis, President-Elect of Congress of Neurological Surgeon, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, Henry Ford Cancer Institute, Detroit, Michigan, Prof. WANG Ding, head of Clinical Trials、Prof. JIANG Feng, director of Brain Tumor Lab, Prof. Michael Chopp, Neurology Department visited FUSCC. Headed by Vice President Dingwei YE, composed of Director Yiqun CAO, Neurosurgery Department、Director Ming NI, Anti-Cancer Association and Editorial Office, multidisciplinary representatives on Neurological Oncology attended the reception.
Prof. Kalkanis, Director of Neurosurgery of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute, which is one of the world's most renowned cancer institute. He is also the President-elect of Congress of Neurological Surgeon (CNS), Director of American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS), former President of CNS and AANS, President of the Michigan union of neurosurgeons, editorial and reviewer of the flagship Neurosurgery journals Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery.
The reception meeting was presided by Yiqun CAO, Director of Neurosurgery Department. On behalf of FUSCC, Vice President Dingwei YE gave a welcome speech at the beginning. Yunhe LU, the representative of Neurosurgery Department delivered a detailed report, introducing the development of clinical work in the past three years, including scientific research and talent training. In 2018, the number of neurosurgery outpatients, operations, inpatients reached 5,002, 451, and 484 respectively. With 16 beds, the number of glioma operations reached the top five in Shanghai in the first three quarters. In future，based on Proton Heavy Ion Radiotherapy resources, the neurosurgery department will build a comprehensive integrated precision treatment model for brain tumors. After the report, Prof. Kalkanis commented that FUSCC neurosurgery Department is composed of young and efficient medical members with unlimited potential. He expects the two sides to gradually start academic exchanges, and invites the neurosurgery team of FUSCC to participate in the American neurosurgeon conference to be held in Miami in 2020.
Representing the US party, Prof. Kalkanis introduced Henry Ford Cancer Institute. Henry Ford Health System, a non-profit medical institution base in Detroit, Michigan (USA), was set up by Henry Ford in 1915, including six comprehensive hospitals, 40 independent medical centers and nine independent emergency centers, in total 23000 staff, 2119 beds which is outstanding in cancer treatment, gynecology, kidney disease, neurological disease, orthopedic, lung disease, and urinary System disease treatment. Then, Prof. Kalkanis and Prof. WANG Ding presented two academic reports titled Updated Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Brain Tumors and Phase I Clinical Trials Introduction and Review, which aroused a heated discussion.
