Established in 2005, the Multidisciplinary Treatment Team of Thoracic Cancer includes experts from Department of Thoracic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Palliative Care and Endoscopy. The team is currently chaired by Professor Haiquan Chen of thoracic surgery, with Professor Xiaolong Fu of radiation oncology as Vice-chairman. The Lung Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center of Fudan Univeristy Shanghai cancer center is an affiliation of this team.
The multidisciplinary team runs the first thoracic cancer disease-specific clinic for out-patient in Shanghai. Since its establishment, tens of thousands of patients with difficult or complicated cases has benefited from this novel diagnostic and treatment model with improved survival and quality of life. The team also provides advanced international consultation on patients’ demand by its close cooperative relationship with the top medical centers in the United States, including MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), University of Pittsburg Medical Center and Duke University Medical Center.
With a tight collaboration among all the team members, the team is active in participating in numerous prospective clinical trials, and in charge of several key programs including the “985” National Discipline Construction Program, National Nature and Scientific Foundation Program and Shanghai Key Scientific Research Program. The Department of Radiation Oncology is recognized as the Key Clinical Discipline of the National Ministry of Health, and is also awarded the first and second prize by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai City Science & Technology Progress Award. Their research achievements were published by ’Radiotherapy & Oncology’ and ’International Journal of Radiation Oncology . Biology . Physics’ which has the highest impact factor in the field of radiation oncology.The current Chairman Prof. Haiquan Chen, who has published more than 30 papers on notable SCI journals including ’JCO’, ’PNAS’, ’Cancer’, ’ATS’ and ’JTO’, is internationally recognized for his academic status in the field of general thoracic surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) in the workforce on international relationships and is also accepted by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) as the only member in Chinese mainland in the field of general thoracic surgery.
