The multidisciplinary treatment team of pancreas & hepatobiliary cancer is a team to meet the needs of modern treatment modality, which comprises of experts from surgical oncology, pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, Chinese traditional medicine, radiology, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, endoscopy and translational research. The purpose of this team is to provide diagnosis and best therapeutic strategy for patients with pancreatic, hepatic and biliary tumors. Comprehensive treatment is provided to each patient guided by evidence-based medicine.

Led by the team chair, professor Quanxin Ni of surgical oncology, multidisciplinary academic discussion and difficult case seminar are organized weekly (every Tuesday morning and Friday morning respectively).We innovatively proposed the new strategy, “Three phases Treatment of Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer” in China. In this theory, local advanced pancreatic cancer is suggested to be treated by three steps, namely, biliary drainage, intra-arterial chemotherapy and curative operation. We have gained great experience in this area through practicing for more than ten years and this technique doubled the curative operation rate for locally advanced pancreatic cancer. It decreases the liver metastasis and lymphatic metastatie rate.

Suppor ted by the Ministry of Public Health of China, we also investigated the characteristics of lymphatic metastasis of pancreatic cancer. We found totally different lymphatic metastasis mode in Chinese patients, which plays an important role in guiding lymph nodes resection and lymphatic chemotherapy. All these findings were incorporated in the Guideline of pancreatic cancer compiled by the Chinese Anti-cancer Association and rewarded by the Ministry of Public Health, China and Shanghai Medical Society.
