Department of Urology Surgery

The Department of Urology, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC) is specialized in treating patients with genitourinary system cancers, including prostate, bladder, kidney, adrenal gland, ureter, urethra, testis, epididymis, spermatic cord, and penis and so on. The good practice of genitourinary cancer relys on the leading edge of pathology to ensure correct diagnosis and accurate pathological tumor grading and staging. It also emphasizes the normative operation and ensures the thoroughness of the initial operation. Combining surgery with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, interventional therapy, biological therapy and other treatment, we improved the survival of GU cancer patients greatly. Now our department is taking the lead in China, particularly in prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma and bladder cancer.

Prof. Dingwei Ye, the director Chairman of Department of Urology and vice-president of FUSCC, trained in the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, established a comprehensive guideline suitable for Chinese patients, and actively developed new techniques to improve the efficacy of routine operation. For example, in the conventional radical prostatectomy, he explored the characteristics suitable for Asian pelvic anatomy to improve patient’s survival rate, maintain the sexual function active and keep the incidence of urinary incontinence as low as possible. In addition, Prof. Ye, as the prime specialist and director, first established the multidisciplinary team of GU cancer, including the leading experts of urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and diagnostic radiologists, etc. The multidisciplinary approach greatly improved the accuracy of diagnosis, and maximized the cure rate and survival rate of the patients.

The Department of Urology consists of urological ward, diagnostic and therapeutic center, experimental research center and tissue bank. The urological ward locates on the 8th floor in Building No. 3, with 60 beds and has a clean and comfortable environment. The diagnostic and therapeutic center, covering an area of 600 square meters, has patients waiting area, treatment area and operation rooms. The experimental research center provides an advanced biomedical research platform. The tissue bank has collected paired blood and tissue of GU cancer patients for more than 2,000 cases. The Department of Urology is equipped with a series of high quality system, including Olympus and STORZ endoscopic transurethral system (rigid and flexible cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, transurethral resection and vaporization system, etc.), laparoscopic system, 100PLUS holmium laser cutting system, plasma cutting system, ValleyLab vessel sealing system, urinary dynamic instrument, urologic specialized ultrasound and prostate biopsy system, etc.

The specialists in the Department of Urology all have doctoral or master degree and published more than 150 papers in the international and domestic academic journals. The department has received several awards, including the top prize of domestic academic urology in China，“Jieping Wu Urologic Award”, the first prize of “Shanghai Science and Technology Development”. Besides, the department has won the National Science Foundation, the foundation of Ministry of Education, the foundation of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai. The department is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Society of Urology (SIU) Collaboration Advisory Committee, International Society of Urologic disease (ICUD), GU cancer professional committee of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and Cancer Professional Committee of Chinese Urology Association, etc.
