Department of Gynecologic Oncology



History & Overview
The Department was formally created in 1956 but the history can trace back to 1931, the establishment of our hospital, with its gathering of multidisciplinary physicians, Dr. Shumo Cai from Irradiotherapy Department, Dr. Zhiyi Zhang from Surgery and Dr. Shuxiang Liu from Gynecology. After 54 years of development, our department not only expanded in terms of experience accumulation, but also developed a perfect medically professional culture, multidisciplinary treatment mode of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. As one of the oldest and most-respected gynecologic center in our country, we have devoted more than half century to patient care as well as to innovative research, making significant contributions to new and better therapies for the treatment of gynecologic cancer.




Now our department has more than 70 employees including surgeons, medical oncologists and radiologists, as well as clinic nurses. Several professors such as Prof. Xiaohua Wu, Moshu Cai, Zhiyi Zhang, Ziting Li, Huaying Wang, Rongyu Zang, etc, are acting as national leaders in the specialty of gynecologic oncology, serving as presidents or vice-presidents in the Committee of Gynecologic Cancer, CACA (Chinese Anti-Cancer Association) and Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association. Prof. Wu, the chairman of our Department, and Prof. Zang are also active members of International Gynecologic Cancer Society(IGCS).




The department now has 120 beds. Over the past decade, our clinical workload steadily increased. Last year we had 64,000 outpatient visits, 3,172 inpatient admissions and 3,139 surgical operations incuding above 85% major procedures on Gynecologic maliglancies. Based on the advanced radiation equipments, such as LINACs, afterload brachytherapy machine, there were more than 600 patients receiving radiotherapy and 1000 receiving chemotherapy in 2009.




The department also attached great importance to scientific research. During the past 5 years, we conducted 5 research projects at state level and 19 projects at a ministry/ provincial level. About 70 research papers were published in key Chinese or international medical journals.




As the oncology base of Fudan university, our department places great effort upon basic and continued medical education and training, emphasizing upon basic principles, methodology, training individual independence. For several decades, we have trained numerous outstanding Chinese gynecologic oncologists, provided advanced training to 30 physician fellows from our country annually, which displays an important and leading role in the development of gynecologic oncology.




Our department recognizes the heavy burden that cancer places on the patients and members of their family. We are trying to provide the best service in the care of patients with gynecologic malignancies and contributing to solving the cancer problem.




Mission
The mission of our department is to develop and maintain the highest quality integrated programs in patient care, research, education and prevention. To create a national and international prominent subject by providing research-driven clinical practice to improve the chance of optimal cancer treatment, provide a combined treatment model, enhance survivors' coping with long-term consequences of cancer treatment, promote a healthy life style and encourage changes to reduce cancer risk.




Gynecologic Cancer Treatment
The Department of Gynecologic Oncology specializes in treating cancers of the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, vulva and fallopian tubes. The department also offers cervical cancer screenings for high-risk women.
Our MDT team includes surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists and gynecologic pathologists to help make the treatment a positive experience. Our team will develop and carry out a treatment plan that aims for the best possible outcome based on your diagnosis. Our patients not only have access to the most current therapies available, but also have various clinical trials to explore new treatments.
