HEAD&NECK SURGERY

 

The department of head and neck surgery has been established as an independent department since 1985, which used to be a division of the surgery department of our hospital. Importantly it is the first head and neck department among the cancer hospitals of China.

 

Since 1960 we have performed the radical operations for the cancer of thyroid, salivary glands and others. We are the first one in China to apply modified neck dissection in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer in 1970 and lateral approach of thyroidectomy for the recurrence in 1984. To further protect the postoperative function of the patients, we started the modified neck dissection with the preservation of cervical plexus in 1999. We studied 2000 patients with thyroid cancer. The 10 year survival rate was 92%, parallel with the advanced level of the world. The infrahyoid myocutaneous flap used in the treatment of tongue cancer, which was invented by our professor Wang Hongshi in 1979, achieved a great success, and it was lately adapted in the reconstruction in the treatment of other malignant tumors of head and neck. This invention received high appraisal, which was awarded the second prize of Progress of Science and Technology from the Ministry of Health in 1996 and also third prize of national Progress of Science and Technology in 1997. In 2001 we received the award of Medical Achievement of Fudan University for the application of the sternocleidomastoid muscle bone flap in the repairement of trachea.

 

We now have 27 employees, including 4 professors, 6 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 3 residents and 16 nurses. In 2009, 2875 patients had been admitted to our department, and 2786 of them got surgical procedures. To deliver the highest level of healthcare and optimize the functional outcome, we cooperate with the experts from other departments of our hospital, such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic oncology and nuclear medicine to make the comprehensive treatment plans to meet the patients’ needs.

 

In the latest years we tried to detect the EB and HPV virus with the technique of molecular biology in the diagnosis of cervical metastatic carcinoma from an unknown primary site and got initial results. We have published dozens of papers in the domestic and international peer-reviewed journals and three books.
